Young Author Oscar inspires young readers and writers

January and February have been busy months for 18-year-old Oscar Lawson and his book TIGER, with 3 author events at local schools and halls, spreading the message that you can be an author at any age. TIGER is an action and adventure book for children aged 8-13, featuring mystery, secrecy, a quirky 13-year old genius coder called Archie, and plenty of fun along the way.

The book toured first to Brockhurst and Marlston House schools in January, where Oscar, who wrote TIGER when he was just 15, spoke to the pupils aged 8-13. He talked about his journey from writing short stories at junior school to penning full manuscripts in Lockdown 2020 when he wrote “TIGER: The secret intelligence group looking for a brilliant mind.” Oscar read extracts from the book, sharing tips on creative writing for the pupils, such as starting in an action-packed part of the story and flashing back to the start. The pupils asked lots of great questions, got a free bookmark each, and it was an enjoyable event.

Then in February, pupils from 6 local primary schools gathered for a 2-hour puzzles and creative writing workshop with Oscar, who had prepared TIGER-related activity booklets with riddles, crosswords, and a short story exercise. Around 40 children and their parents attended, buying signed books and enjoying refreshments. Some children as young as 8 told Oscar they were already working on their own stories and has aspirations to be an author like him. There were prizes for the best short stories, which varied from the realistic to the fantastical, all of great quality and with lots of potential future writers showing their talents.

Ahead of World Book Day, Oscar finished February at Bishopsgate School, giving an assembly to the whole school (nursery to year 8). Sporting a branded TIGER hoodie, he shared his story and more extracts from the book, inspiring the pupils into writing creatively and sharing their stories. They were intrigued by the whole publishing process from cover design (they liked the Tiger on the front) to printing and getting the book into shops.

All events were thoroughly enjoyable and hopefully students learnt a lot and were inspired to write more themselves.
